Learning how to use a ring sling properly can transform your babywearing experience, offering a convenient, comfortable, and easy way to carry your baby. Ring slings are versatile and are loved by parents for their simplicity and adaptability. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about using a ring sling, from choosing the right one to mastering safe and comfortable carries. Optimised for both beginners and seasoned babywearers, this article aims to help you confidently embrace how to use a ring sling for you and your little one.

Ok. Let's dive in!

Introduction to Ring Slings

Simply put, a ring sling is a type of baby carrier made from a long piece of fabric threaded through two aluminium rings, creating an adjustable pouch for carrying your baby. Ideal for newborns through to toddlers, ring slings are especially great for quick carries, breastfeeding on the go, and fostering closeness and bonding. Parents love them for their ease of use, stylish designs, and portability.

Many parents love them for toddlers at the 'up-and-down' stage (when they don't know wether they want to walk or be carried).

Understanding how to use a ring sling starts with recognising its benefits:

  • Convenience: Quick to put on and adjust.
  • Bonding: Promotes skin-to-skin contact and closeness.
  • Versatility: Suitable for various ages and carrying positions.

Choosing the Right Ring Sling

Before diving into how to use a ring sling, selecting the right one is crucial for safety and comfort (I made the mistake of buying a cheap one off of ebay way back when and THAT experience nearly made me give up babywearing for good!).

Luckily, YOU have the benefit of MY 17 years experience, so here are the key factors to consider:

  • Fabric: Opt for breathable, natural fibres like cotton, linen, or bamboo. Avoid slippery or overly stretchy materials.
  • Rings: Ensure rings are high-quality, tested aluminum (the only ones we sell), designed specifically for babywearing.
  • Size: Choose a length that fits your body (typically 1.8–2.2 meters, depending on your size); we usually stock 2m which fits pretty much everyone).
  • Weight Limits: Check the manufacturer’s guidelines, usually supporting babies from 8 lbs (3.5 kg) to 35-40 lbs (15-18 kg).

A well-chosen sling makes learning how to use a ring sling easier and more enjoyable. As a result, you'll be much more likely to reach for it as your go-to option.

Safety Guidelines

Safety is paramount when learning how to use a ring sling, so let's consider these tips before we look at the specifics of using one. Follow these essential guidelines to protect your baby.

  • TICKS Rule for Safe Babywearing:
  • - Tight: The sling should be snug, with no loose fabric.
    - In view: Always see your baby’s face.
    - Close enough to kiss: Your baby’s head should be near your chin.
    - Keep chin off chest: Ensure an open airway.
    - Supported back: Baby’s back should be upright and supported.

  • Ring Check: Confirm rings are secure and fabric is evenly threaded without twists.
  • Positioning: Keep baby in an upright or slightly reclined position, never curled forward.
  • Avoid Common Mistakes: Don’t cover baby’s face with fabric, and always double-check adjustments.

By prioritising safety, you’ll feel confident mastering how to use a ring sling. Always consult your sling’s manual for specific safety instructions.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using a Ring Sling

Now, let’s get to the heart of how to use a ring sling with this detailed, beginner-friendly guide:

1. Preparing the Sling

  • Thread the Rings: Hold the rings in one hand and pull the fabric tail through both rings, then fold it back over one ring and under the other. Ensure the fabric lies flat without twists.
  • Spread the Fabric: Fan out the fabric through the rings for a smooth, even adjustment.
  • Position the Rings: Place the rings high on your shoulder, near your collarbone.

2. Adjusting for a Snug Fit

  • Put on the Sling: Slip the sling over your head, with the rings on one shoulder and the pouch across your body.
  • Tighten the Tail: Pull the tail gently to remove slack, ensuring the fabric is snug but not overly tight.
  • Check Comfort: The sling should feel secure and comfortable before adding your baby.

3. Positioning Your Baby

  1. Newborn Carry (Cradle or Upright):
  2. - Hold your baby high on your shoulder (opposite the rings).
    - Slide them into the pouch, legs tucked in a frog-like position.
    - Spread fabric over their back and bottom, ensuring their head is supported.

  3. Hip Carry (Older Babies):
  4. - Position baby on your hip, legs out in an “M” shape (knees higher than bottom).
    - Pull fabric up to their upper back, tightening the tail to secure.

  5. Front Carry:
  6. - Similar to hip carry, but baby faces you in the centre of your chest.
-Adjust fabric to support their back and thighs.

If I were starting from the beginning again, I'd practice these steps in front of a mirror to perfect how to use a ring sling. Start with short sessions to help build your confidence. Even practice with a teddy beforehand.

Here's a quick video that that puts all that together and shows you how to use a ring sling correctly.

Pro Tips

Pro Tip 1 - When adjusting the fabric (either up baby's back or through the rings), always try to lift baby's weight - imagine you're doing the robot dance - your arm is bent at the elbow so that your forearm is in a horizontal line and parallel with baby's bottom. Supporting baby in this way will ease the pressure of the fabric in the rings of the sling, allowing it to be more easily adjusted.

Pro Tip 2 - Adjust the excess fabric through the rings in a horizontal motion - adjust in the direction the fabric has come from. The fabric will move through the rings with much greater ease than if you try to move it vertically.

Pro Tip 3 - Spread the gathered fabric at the rings over your shoulder. In spreading the fabric, it moves the gathers away from your neck, increasing comfort. It creates an axis between your shoulder and the pouch where baby is seated, creating balance.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with practice, you may encounter challenges when learning how to use a ring sling. Here’s how to address them:

Discomfort: If the sling digs into your shoulder, spread the fabric wider or adjust the rings’ position. For baby discomfort, check their leg and back positioning. Make sure the fabric isn't too tight behind their knees.

Loose Sling: Tighten the tail in small sections (top, middle, bottom) for a secure fit. And like I said above, pull the tail fabric in a horizontal direction.

Slipping Rings: Ensure fabric is evenly threaded and not twisted. High-quality rings reduce slipping.

Size Adjustments: For larger or smaller babies, adjust the pouch depth by pulling more or less fabric through the rings.

Patience is key when troubleshooting. Don't rush things.

Care & Maintenance

To keep your ring sling in top condition, follow these care tips:

Washing: Machine wash on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, or hand wash delicate fabrics. Check the manufacturer’s instructions. Pop a sock over the rings to protect both them and the drum.

Drying: Air dry to prevent fabric shrinkage or ring damage.

Storage: Store in a dry, clean place, loosely folded to avoid creases.

Inspection: Regularly check for frayed fabric, loose stitching, or damaged rings.

Proper care ensures your sling remains safe and comfortable, enhancing your overall babywearing experience.

When & Where to Use a Ring Sling

Ring slings are great for various trips or tasks, and are often a go-to choice for parents.

  • Quick Trips: Ideal for short errands like nipping to the local shop or doing the school run.
  • Household Chores: It's easy to keep baby close while cooking or cleaning (you don't have to worry about them as you know exactly where they are!).

  • Soothing: Perfect for quickly calming a fussy baby, especially during naps.
  • Travel: Compact and easy to pack for vacations or even just family day trips.

However, for long hikes or extended babywearing, I'd suggest a structured carrier for added support. Knowing when, where and for how long you can use a ring sling will greatly enhance your babywearing journey!

Mastering how to use a ring sling opens up a world of convenience, comfort, and closeness for you and your baby. With the right sling, safety knowledge, and practice, you’ll be confidently babywearing in no time. Start with short sessions, prioritise safety, and don’t hesitate to seek support or ask questions.
