Newborn Baby Carriers

Newborn babies love being carried in arms; you've probably figured this out already! So it makes sense to have a baby carrier in your parenting toolkit. Indeed, we'd go so far as to say that a baby carrier is the best investment you can make, even right from the beginning with your newborn.

There are lots of different types of baby carriers, but regardless of the kind you choose, they all allow you to be hands-free whilst your little one is snuggled up safe and close next to you in a close enough to kiss, ergonomic position that is comfortable and supportive both for you and your baby.

Are Baby Carriers Suitable for Newborns?

Baby carriers are definitely suitable for most newborns. Your baby needs to be close to you, to be held. Babies feel more content, calmer next to you when you hold them - you make them feel secure and safe. We have the very best selection of slings and carriers for your newborn, all individually selected by our team of experienced babywearing consultants. Our selection of carriers have been picked because they are best for newborns. They offer ergonomic positioning, are supportive and respectful to your newborns physiology.

What Type of Carrier is Best for a Newborn?

Ultimately, the best carrier is one that both you and your little one find comfortable. There are a few things to take into account. You can help to narrow your choice down by considering:

  • your budget;
  • your lifestyle;
  • the age of your baby, and
  • who will be using the sling.

A really good buckle carrier will allow you to carry your little one in such a way as to be respectful of their physiology, whilst at the same time being comfortable for you. Their back should be soft, yet supported. Not stiff, not rigid. Their legs should be supported all the way along the thigh, to the knee pit. Their bottom should sit lower than their knees. Traditionally, this is called the ‘spread squat position’ or ‘M’ position. It is often defined now as the ‘hip healthy position’. Their head should be free, clear and unobstructed. All of our newborn carriers do all these things.

Can I Put My 2 Week Old in a Baby Carrier?

As a general answer, yes absolutely. If you are feeling well and baby is doing well there is every reason to keep your little one close and secure in a baby sling or carrier and your hands free!

How Do You Carry a 2 Month Old Baby?

Younger babies and newborns should always be carrier in the parent-facing position. They should sit fairly high on your torso, so that you can kiss the top of their heads. Depending on the carrier or sling, baby can be seated full on your front, or off-centre.

How Long Can a Newborn Be In a Baby Carrier?

There is no specific hard time limit for baby in a carrier. Unlike car seats where baby’s head is sitting against a hard surface, baby carriers offer an ergonomic ‘seated’ position where their head is free and clear. Between feeds, nappy change time and routine alterations, babies are usually in out of the carrier fairly frequently. Be aware and responsive to your baby’s comfort & temperature; always keep their torso in light layers so they don’t overheat.

Is It Ok For My Newborn to Sleep in a Carrier?

It absolutely is fine for your newborn to sleep in the carrier! Many newborns have a strong startle reflex and often waken when transitioning from feeding to being placed down to sleep. This can cause frustration in both the baby and mother. Keeping your little one upright, snug and secure in a carrier, helps to avoid this frustration and allow you to stay topped up with oxytocin whilst little one sleeps.

Will Carrying My Newborn In a Carrier Hurt My Baby's Hips?

Generally speaking, no it won’t. Unless there is a known history or diagnosis of hip dysplasia or a known hip issue, then a carrier won’t ‘cause’ it to happen. It’s always best to use a carrier that supports your newborn's physiology and is respectful of their newborn form. All of our newborn-suitable carriers are ergonomic and fantastic options for soft, snuggled-up babies!

Are Baby Slings Safe for Newborns?

Absolutely they are! As with any baby item, like car seats or prams, they have to be used properly, according to the manufacturers instructions and current safety guidelines. It’s simple common sense. If you’re not sure about the best and current safety guidelines, just ask us.

When Can You Start Wearing Your Baby In a Sling?

The simplest answer to this is, as soon as you both are ready! The timeframe for carrying is different for everyone. If you feel great straight away, then you can wear your baby in a sling right from the beginnin. If you need some recovery time, then take it. When you’re feeling ready to, or up to it, then go for it! Listen to your body and your baby.

What Is The Best Carrier For Newborns?

Most newborn buckle carriers will fit your newborn. They are all suitable ‘from’ newborn, however as newborns vary so very much, a carrier that fits one newborn may not fit another. They depend very much on factors other than weight, including dimensions, physiology and build.

The best buckle carrier for your newborn is one that fits them well, supports and respects their physiology and does so safely. It should be comfortable for you, and just your style. We have such a huge selection of the very best newborn buckle carriers there’s one that’s right for you, right here!
